We develop and operate commercial-quality, cloud-based software application and platform services used by 10s of thousands of researchers to manage their large–and growing–data management challenges. We have offices located at the NBC Tower in the heart of downtown Chicago and remote employees who work-from-home. Globus, together with Globus Labs, a research group within the University of Chicago, and part of the Data Science and Learning Division at Argonne National Labs, develop and deploy cutting edge technologies to solve new challenges facing the scientific community and enable break-through scientific discoveries.

Job Information

Job Summary:As an intern with the Globus Labs team, the focus of this position will be to assist in the development and deployment of new software services to help researchers publish and share their data and to solve problems in domains ranging from materials science, chemistry, catalysis, x-ray science, and more. We’re looking for highly skilled students and young people skilled in the techniques of data preprocessing, machine learning, and also building and supporting Python services and systems. The position will be remote, primarily appointed at the University of Chicago with collaborations at Argonne National Laboratory.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in the development and deployment of new software.

• Assist researchers publish and share data.

• Process data through Python services and systems.

• Use basic computing coding to complement existing projects.

• Learn machine learning code.

• Review existing software development programs.

• Take notes, participate in meetings and discussion on current projects.

• Create summaries and reports on project meetings.

• Contribute on active projects with basic analysis and reviews to summarize for project supervisor.

• Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

• High School Diploma or GED required.

• Currently enrolled in a degree seeking College or University preferred.

Experience:

• Basic computer software programming experience required.

• Exposure to programming languages such as Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript required.

• Exposure to ML models preferred.

• Relevant programming experience developing, implementing, debugging, and maintaining applications or data services written in Python preferred.

• Front-end or Back-end design familiarity preferred.

• Machine learning frameworks such as Tensorflow, Keras, or Pytorch preferred.

• Developing user-facing software preferred.

• Experience developing machine learning models and data processing pipelines preferred.

• Experience with the latest and greatest web standards, including HTML5 and CSS3 preferred.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

• Ability to assemble and organize data and prepare reports.

• Working knowledge of software development programs.

• Demonstrated capacity to work independently in an organized, detailed manner.

• Strong computer skills including the ability to effectively use software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Ability to follow direction and guidance.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

• Requires the ability to work independently, under supervisor direction, for periods of up to eight (8) hours.

• This role will require occasional in-person and/or zoom meetings.

Pay Range:

• $17 - $20 per hour
